How to read a crypto chart

What's different about crypto charts — and what's the same.

TL;DR

Crypto charts use the same tools as stock charts but with different rhythms. The market is 24/7, weekends matter, and BTC dominance shapes everything else.

Same as stocks

Candlesticks, support/resistance, moving averages, RSI, MACD, volume — the math doesn't change because the asset is crypto.

What's different

Crypto has structural quirks.

  • 24/7 trading — no closing prices, no gaps. Daily candles roll at 00:00 UTC.
  • Weekend volume — typically lighter than weekdays; weekend moves often reverse
  • Higher volatility — 5–10% daily moves are routine
  • Manipulation — thinner books on altcoins mean whales can move price fast
  • Correlation to BTC — most alts move with Bitcoin, especially in stress

BTC dominance and alt cycles

BTC.D (Bitcoin's share of total crypto market cap) drives the alt cycle. Rising BTC.D often means money flowing to BTC (bearish for alts). Falling BTC.D in a rising market = alt season.

Worked example

Reading a BTC 4-hour chart

BTC drops $74K to $66K in 24h. RSI 4H prints 22. Volume on down candles is 2x average.

  1. 1Price$74K → $66K (-11%)
  2. 2Volume2x average on down candles
  3. 3RSI 4H22 (oversold)
  4. 4StructureHeld above $65K weekly support
  5. 5ReadCapitulation with high volume, oversold, near support — typical bounce setup
Takeaway

Multi-timeframe context: 4H tells you the move; daily tells you whether it broke structure; weekly tells you whether the trend is intact.

Common mistakes

What to avoid

  • !Trusting weekend action — Monday often retraces weekend moves
  • !Ignoring BTC dominance when trading alts
  • !Using stock-style stops — crypto ranges are 3–5× wider
  • !Charting tiny-cap alts on low time frames — manipulation makes signals worthless
