Major, minor, and exotic pairs

How pairs are categorised — and which to trade as a beginner.

TL;DR

Forex pairs sort into three buckets by liquidity. Majors (USD + a top-7 currency) trade tightest. Minors/crosses skip USD. Exotics involve emerging-market currencies and have wider spreads.

The seven majors

Tightest spreads, deepest liquidity, most reliable price action.

  • EUR/USD — most-traded pair globally
  • USD/JPY — second most-traded; key carry pair
  • GBP/USD — 'cable' (after the transatlantic telegraph)
  • USD/CHF — 'swissie'; safe-haven correlation
  • AUD/USD — 'aussie'; commodity-driven
  • USD/CAD — 'loonie'; tied to oil
  • NZD/USD — 'kiwi'; smallest major

Minors (crosses)

No USD. Driven by the two currencies' interest-rate spread.

  • EUR/GBP, EUR/JPY, EUR/CHF — European crosses
  • GBP/JPY — high volatility
  • AUD/JPY — risk-on/risk-off barometer

Exotics

Major + emerging-market currency. Wider spreads, news-driven moves.

  • USD/MXN, USD/BRL, USD/ZAR, USD/TRY
  • Higher carry rates
  • Sensitive to local political news
Worked example

Spread comparison

Typical retail spreads during London session.

  1. 1EUR/USD (major)0.3 pips
  2. 2USD/JPY (major)0.4 pips
  3. 3GBP/JPY (cross)1.8 pips
  4. 4EUR/PLN (exotic)8 pips
  5. 5USD/TRY (exotic)20+ pips
  6. 6Same time, same brokerSpread on TRY ~70× wider than EUR/USD
Takeaway

Spread is a real cost. Strategies that work on majors often die in exotics from round-trip cost alone.

Common mistakes

What to avoid

  • !Backtesting on EUR/USD and assuming the strategy works on USD/ZAR
  • !Holding exotic positions over weekends — gaps and rollover punishing
  • !Trading minors during the wrong session
  • !Ignoring intervention risk on exotics (TRY, CHF historically)

USD paired with one of the seven most-traded currencies.

Q2Why do exotic pairs have wider spreads?+
